Research Background

Now 4th nuclear power plant (4thNPP) in Taiwan has been completed 90%. Though Taiwan electric company (Taipower) aim to insert uranium fuel rod in the end of 2010 or new year of 2011, there is some possibility of delaying the plan because of accidents in control room in succession from March of this year -those accidents happened 4times, and one of them was 28hours stop of all power supply- .

In Japan, quake-proof guideline has been reconsidered after 2006, many case of reinforcement work or abolish furnace have been happened (eg: 1st and 2nd furnace stopped in Hamaoka). But quake-proof standard is still old in Taiwan which places in the circum-Pacific earthquake belt same of Japan-the standard value is 300 gal for 1st,2nd and 3rd NPP, 400gal for 4th NPP in Taiwan-. Until withdraw martial law in 1987, information of the nature of the soil and geographical features were military secret in Taiwan. With this historical circumstances, there is every possibility that geological surveys of NPPs were not sufficient-1st,2nd and 3rd NPP completed and 4th NPP's location has decided in this dictatorship period-.
In 2010, from September 14th to 17th, Japanese geologist, Mr. Kunio Shiosaka has done a summary geological survey in Gongliao (construction site of 4th NPP), and he afresh found earth fault belts at the seaside near by 4th NPP from 1.5km and indicated possibility for existence of fault just under the nuclear reactor.

We would like to accomplish this citizens' first geological survey in Taiwan, and try to citizens' first earth fault observation in near future. With the earth fault observation, we can predict earthquakes and will stop the power plant before the catastrophe. This research results also has the roles to enhance the interest for danger of earth faults and consciousness of quake disaster prevention in Taiwan-quakes occur frequently-.We hope this research will be a chance to reconsider earth quake for the people.
